Filling

The bacterial plaque is formed by bacteria that naturally occur in our mouth. Bacterial plaque is responsible for the production of acid due to the presence of leftover sugary and starchy foods in the mouth. The acids present in the mouth can lead to the erosion of the teeth's mineral tissue, resulting in the deterioration of the enamel and the onset of tooth decay.

The filling process, however, focuses on restoring the tooth to its original shape after removing all decay. This is achieved by using a long-lasting substance that will not cause any issues in the mouth. Essentially, it is a way to clean the decayed area and prevent further problems by filling it with the appropriate material.

While dentists try to rescue the natural tooth rather than extracting it, aesthetic concerns are also eliminated in the filling process. Today, the use of a variety of filling colours that match the natural colour of the tooth is common, and there are alternative coloured fillings that children find appealing.

Traditional amalgam (silver) fillings may raise aesthetic concerns, but there are alternative options available, such as composite fillings, porcelain fillings, and tooth-colored materials, that can be used to achieve a more pleasing appearance. These fillings offer superior strength, enhanced aesthetics, and increased durability.
